The Book Hut ~ Longstitch Binding & Pamphlet Binding Workshops in Worthing
Professional book and paper conservator Maudie Gunzi has two workshops coming up, both at Studio Freer at East Beach Studios, Worthing.
Longstitch Binding Workshop
This teaches a traditional method of binding that originates from Germany and dates back to the late 14th C. In this method, sections of parchment or paper were sewn directly through holes in the covering material, giving support to the spine, and flexibility to the book. You will come away with an A6 hand-made leather binding and Maudie will provide all tools and materials for this binding.
Pamphlet Binding Workshop – Evenings One & Two
This two evening workshop will be aimed at teaching and creating a basic pamphlet binding. The pamphlet binding is the first stage of learning bookbinding, and essential to understanding how a fine binding is created. You will come away with an A5 hand-made pamphlet binding, an introduction into the hand-skills required for bookbinding and a basic understanding of the structure of fine bindings. Both tools and material can be purchased during the courses if you would like to take any home with you to make more bindings.
Maudie is also giving two talks in summer; Saturday 18th June at the Embroidery Guild and Tuesday 21st June at the Worthing Library as part of the Worthing Artists Open Houses.
